Member spotlight: October

Name: Luke “Ray” Rowley

I am from the eastern side of Washington State. Prior to my move to Shungnak, I was living in Hawai’i. It was to crowded and hot for me, so I moved to Alaska. I had a few friends who previously worked in
this region who gave it good recommendations.

I enjoy skiing, on both snow and water. I learned to downhill ski from my dad when I was little. Since moving to Shungnak I have had the opportunity to learn cross country skiing as well. I read only when I have to, and I like long walks on the beach.

Since being here I have learned that clear instructions down to the last detail are important and ironically flexibility. It has been difficult getting those to coincide at times but I believe that this struggle has made me a better teacher.

The best part of teaching in rural Alaska, like anywhere, is the kids. While they may make you cry, and pull out your hair, It is also nice to see the gains when they are made, not just academics but social and morally too. Here I may get to stay with the same kids for several years. I see them grow up, make mistakes, as well as the moments where they shine. It is a unique honor to be such a big part of my students lives.
