What's going on with the calendar?

We know many of you have questions and concerns regarding the recent calendar selection process. We would like to provide you with some background on the issue and then bring you up to speed on where we are currently in the process.

Last spring the Northwest Arctic Education Association (NAEA) filed a grievance asserting that Saturday in-services were a violation of Article X. Standard Work Year and workday as this deviation from the standard workweek had not been mutually agreed upon by the District and the Association. The resolution to this grievance was an MOA (Memorandum of Agreement). The Association allowed the District to continue with Saturday in-services for the current year provided that teachers would be surveyed about in-service and that the Association would be meaningfully involved in the planning of Saturday in-services. Additionally, the Association and the District would work together to create calendar options for the coming years that did not include Saturday in-services.

It is clear from the events that have transpired over the past several weeks that there has been a breakdown in this agreement on the part of the Association and the District. Both groups have taken responsibility for the break down and have agreed to back up and start the process over. We want to thank you for this input you provided to your Site Representatives during this process and we would like to thank the Site Representatives for their diligence in contacting the Association with members questions and concerns. The District and the Association will be meeting on December 1st to re-visit the calendar options and discuss how to accurately fulfill the agreements made in the MOA. If you have further questions or concerns, please direct them to your Site Representative who will them bring them to the Association leadership.
